I was today days old when I learned that college football’s 2026 season doesn’t open in some familiar home stadium — it opens this Saturday, August 29, on the other side of the Atlantic, in Dublin, Ireland. North Carolina plays TCU at Aviva Stadium at noon ET on ESPN, and buried in that matchup is a genuine revenge-tour storyline: it’s a rematch of the exact game that opened Bill Belichick’s college coaching career, and TCU blew him out.
The Headline Game: Belichick’s Rematch in Dublin
This is the 5th consecutive Aer Lingus College Football Classic played at Aviva Stadium — college football has actually been played in Ireland since 1988, when the first game (then called the Emerald Isle Classic, a Boston College win over Army) was, per Wikipedia, the “first major” NCAA-sanctioned American college football game ever played in Europe. TCU is the designated home team for this one, and per UNC’s own athletics site, as best we can determine this is the first time in North Carolina program history the Tar Heels have played a football game outside the United States — the Aer Lingus Classic’s own all-time appearance list shows UNC and TCU both making their series debut this year. Here’s the part that makes it more than just a season opener: this is only Bill Belichick’s second-ever college football game. His debut came last Labor Day, September 1, 2025, at home in Kenan Stadium — against TCU. It did not go well. TCU won 48-14, outgaining UNC 542 yards to 222 and piling up 29 first downs to 10. So the team that kicks off Belichick’s second full season as a college head coach is the same team that beat him by 34 points in his first-ever game — just this time on a neutral field, 3,300+ miles from Chapel Hill.
The Rest of Week 0: 8 Games, Noon to 10pm ET

What to Watch For
This posts five days ahead of kickoff, so consider it the preview rather than the recap. The obvious one to circle is noon ET on ESPN — UNC and TCU, live from Dublin, with Belichick getting a shot at the same team, and largely the same result to avoid, that opened his college coaching career. If Dublin isn’t your thing, the slate stays busy deep into the night, closing out with Memphis-UNLV under the lights in Las Vegas at 10pm ET.

I’m an NC State grad, and Saturday I’m headed to Charlottesville with a good friend who’s a die-hard Virginia fan to watch the Wolfpack and Cavaliers kick off at Scott Stadium in person.
